Kumite – 2 bouts lppon Kumite (at the discretion of grading officer)
Choice of 2 kata from the SSWU Senior Kata List chosen by candidate.
Demonstration of 3 bunkai from each kata.
Candidate will be required to write a thesis – subject advised by SSWU.
The character and attitude of the candidate becomes more important at this level and is also taken into consideration before being accepted to grade.
The SSWU provide various opportunities for dan gradings.
Under our rules it is possible for member groups and associations to carry
out gradings from 1 st – 3 rd dan according to their own dan grading
programme if they wish. The only stipulation is that the grading officer must
be a minimum of TWO grades above the candidate for the grade to be
Grades of 4 th dan and above will take place in front of a SSWU panel.
The SSWU has a dan grading panel consisting of senior grade members.
The panel come together at various SSWU seminars and events organised
by SSWU member countries or associations.
On such occasions the possibility exists for dan gradings to take place.

to the SSWU Assistant General Secretary prior the exam.
Grades 1 st – 3 rd dan a minimum of 1 month before.
Grades of 4 th dan & above a minimum of 6 months before.
For grades of 6 th dan & above a thesis will be required from the candidate.
The subject matter will be chosen by the panel and notified 3 months
before the exam. The thesis should be completed and returned to the
Assistant General Secretary at least 2 weeks before the exam.
All applications to grade in front of SSWU panel MUST be submitted by the
HEAD of the member group or association.
To avoid misunderstandings and disappointment, good and effective
communication is vital at all times during the application process.
All time frames should be adhered to.
All references relating to grading in front of the SSWU panel must be
submitted to the SSWU Assistant General Secretary and to
